FIVB mourns passing of KVF President and CAVB Vice President Waithaka Kioni

The FIVB is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) President and African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Vice President Waithaka Kioni at the age of 70.


Mr Kioni was a highly respected and visionary member of the African Volleyball Family. He worked tirelessly and passionately to develop volleyball and beach volleyball in Kenya and across all of Africa.

Mr Kioni was a pioneer of the FIVB’s Volleyball Empowerment programme, with the Kenya national women’s volleyball team, aka the Malika Strikers, having been selected for a pilot project ahead of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Kenya’s impressive results led to the team receiving ongoing support ahead of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship and beyond.


In addition, Mr Kioni served as National Olympic Committee Kenya Vice President and CAVB Vice President in charge of Finance.


The FIVB joins the African Volleyball Confederation, Kenya Volleyball Federation and global Volleyball Family in extending its deepest condolences to Mr Kioni’s family and friends at this time of great sorrow.
