Road to Paris 2024 sees Olympic Solidarity investment in volleyball grow significantly
CEV-FIVB : Infos mar 7 février 2023Olympic Solidarity investment has increased significantly in the short Olympic Games Paris 2024 cycle (2021-2024), with a 125 per cent increase in team support grants specifically, as the FIVB continues to work closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Solidarity to support volleyball and beach volleyball teams in receiving team support grants.
Overall, 105 grants have been provided via Olympic Solidarity in the current Olympic cycle, with 58 team support projects, 23 technical courses for coaches, 20 Olympic scholarships for coaches, and four development of national sports system courses, totalling an investment of over 3.6 million USD and a near 20 per cent increase from the Tokyo 2020 cycle.
For team support grants in particular, the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle has seen a total of 58 projects – 28 for volleyball and 30 for beach volleyball –approved, marking a significant increase from the 36 projects during the five-year Tokyo 2020 cycle (2016-2021). The total investment has also increased by over 125 per cent to nearly 3.2 million USD having been invested in team support grants.
FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça Fᵒ said:
“We are delighted to work closely with the IOC and Olympic Solidarity to ensure National Federations have the opportunity to apply for Olympic Solidarity grants. The figures for Paris 2024 showcase a significant increase, and we are excited to see the impact of this as we move closer to the Games, and on the sport more generally.
“Not only are we supporting our National Federations together with Olympic Solidarity, but we also work closely with local governments to increase the investment in the sport for better results, as part of our multi-stakeholder approach.”
The Kenya women’s national team was supported by Olympic Solidarity in the Tokyo 2020 cycle
The aim of Olympic Solidarity is to provide assistance to all National Olympic Committees for athlete development programmes. This assistance is achieved through multi-faceted programmes prioritising athlete development, but also training of coaches and sports administrators, and promoting the Olympic values. Olympic Solidarity also works closely with the International Federations whose sports are on the Olympic programme.
For Tokyo 2020, four teams supported by Olympic Solidarity qualified for the Games, including the Kenya and Turkey women’s national teams and the Argentina men’s and women’s national teams. The Argentina men’s team also went on to make the podium at the Games with an impressive 3-2 performance against Brazil in the bronze medal match.
