Volleyball Road to Paris 2024: Qualification system for the Olympic Games recap
CEV-FIVB : Infos mar 2 mai 2023With less than 500 days to go to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and the draw for the Road to Paris Volleyball Olympic Qualifiers confirmed, national volleyball teams across the world will be eyeing up their path to securing a place at the Games, while fans will be eagerly awaiting to find out if their team will be in the running for Olympic glory.
Now, with just five months until the Road to Paris Qualifiers - otherwise known as the Olympic Qualification Tournaments (OQTs) - get underway, let’s recap the Olympic Qualification system for Paris 2024 which was approved by the FIVB Board of Administration in 2020 and by the IOC Executive Board in 2022.

The women’s and men’s tournaments will have 12 teams each, totalling 144 athletes per gender. As the host country, the men’s and women’s teams of France have already secured their quota spots.
For the remaining 11 quotas for each gender, places will be allocated via a two-step process to ensure that the best volleyball nations can participate at Paris 2024 while observing the principle of universality.
Step one
Six Olympic quota places will be defined by the Road to Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification Tournaments set for 16-24 September for women’s teams and 30 September to 8 October for the men’s event.
The OQTs will feature 24 of the top eligible teams according to the World Rankings that have not yet qualified for the Games, split into three pools of 8 teams per gender. The top two teams from each pool will then qualify for Paris 2024. The full pool composition for the OQTs can be found here.
Step two
The five remaining places will be decided using the FIVB World Rankings in June 2024 after the preliminary rounds of the Volleyball Nations League are completed. Priority will be given to countries from continents that do not yet have teams qualified for the Games to guarantee the principle of universality.
For example, as there are no teams representing the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) at the OQTs for women, the top ranked women’s national team from Africa will therefore be guaranteed a place at Paris 2024 as part of the remaining five places.
The Paris 2024 Volleyball Qualification System can be found in more detail in both English and French here.
