Ecuador reaches new beach volleyball heights through Volleyball Empowerment programme
CEV-FIVB : Infos lun 13 février 2023The Ecuador Volleyball Federation (FEV) has seen its women’s beach volleyball team make history thanks to the coach support they received from the FIVB’s revolutionary programme of Volleyball Empowerment.
Last year was the first time that the FEV has benefitted from the programme, following the approval of a 12-month coach support project for beach volleyball. The project saw the appointment of Leonardo Ojeda Barrero as a full-time head coach, who helped lead Ecuador’s women’s duo of Ariana Villa and Karelys Simisterra Ortiz to their first ever FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships appearance in Rome last June.

Barrero has also been working with the men’s beach volleyball teams, with World Championships at senior and U21 level, as well as the Pan American Games to look forward to in 2023.
FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° said:
“The development of volleyball around the world is being boosted by our Volleyball Empowerment programme every year. The coach support project has clearly had a positive impact on beach volleyball in Ecuador, as shown by the fantastic achievement of its women’s team in qualifying for the World Championships in Rome. They will no doubt have inspired many Ecuadorians to play beach volleyball. I look forward to seeing their continued progress at the top level in 2023, alongside the further growth of the sport grow throughout Ecuador.”
The men’s beach volleyball teams are also receiving coach support
FEV President Jorge Granja said:
“I would like to express my gratitude towards the FIVB for its support. Leonardo Ojeda Barrero is a highly respected coach and we think he will be able to help us reach new heights on the court, as well as raising the profile of beach volleyball in Ecuador. After improving our South American ranking, our long-term dream is to qualify for the Olympic Games and the Volleyball Empowerment programme will play a crucial role in our journey to achieving that.”
Ecuador pair Ariana Villa and Karelys Simisterra Ortiz were the history-makers when they qualified for the World Championships last May. They sit 74th in the World Rankings, while top male pair Pedro Jaramillo and Dany Jair Leon Nieves rank 144th.
Ecuador’s national beach volleyball teams will be aiming to qualify for this year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Mexico
The long-term aim for both pairs is to qualify for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships 2023 in Mexico, as well as for the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile and the FIVB Volleyball U21 World Championships 2023.
Head Coach Leonardo Ojeda Borrero said:
“The Volleyball Empowerment programme has already had a great impact and will continue to as we look to achieve our goals in 2023. We believe the impetus that the FIVB has given us will bring volleyball in the country to a whole new level, and are truly honoured to be part of this project.”
